Dairy cows in the UK are significantly affected by lameness and many other welfare issues linked to their high productivity requirement; our solution of the compost-bedded pack yard provides a means to improve the welfare of the UK dairy population by providing a more resilient, animal-friendly bedding material which has been proven to improve welfare when managed well. Furthermore, the methods we currently use are sustainable challenges: cubicle housing systems are commonly used in the industry and lead to huge amounts of slurry being produced which is a significant environmental threat. Here, we will use carbon-based materials currently going into landfill to make new solutions for compost-bedded pack yards and make recipes of these sustainable, up-cycled materials for improved health and welfare of dairy cattle, as well as the environment.
