The vision of I2D-MSW project is to make cities and urban environments more inclusive, safe, secure, resilient, and sustainable. In June 2022, there were 137,013 reported casualties of road users, 55% of deaths were car occupants, 14% were pedestrians, 13% were motorcyclists, 12% were pedal cyclists\[1\]. One of the main reasons is poor diving behaviour. Time lost because of congestion costs the UK economy approximately £2 billion per year and will cost £300 billion by 2030\[2\]. In addition, urban transport is responsible for 80% of harmful nitrogen oxide emissions, which cause health problems that cost £20 billion a year\[3\].This project will develop new products and services based on the emerging 5G C-V2X (Vehicle-to-Everything) standard to make roads and cities, safe, secure, resilient, fraud-proof, and sustainable.Transport For London is exploring options for Pay-as-your-Drive services for the expanded ULEZ zone. The current flat charging mechanism penalises suburban residents, where public transport is less dense than in the city centre, who have no alternative but to use a car to reach public transport. Supporting multimodal transport is a key objective of the wider CELTIC-NEXT project. The combination of a car-mounted On-Board-Unit (OBU) and C-V2X would be a solution to provide fine-grained charging based on distance and zones travelled. The C-V2X market comprises of On-Board-Units (OBU), personal/portable OBU (e.g., a device carried by a cyclist), Roadside Units (RSU) plus the associated software and services. Data collected by the system can be used for traffic optimisation, traffic planning and road junction improvement. The 5G Automotive Association identifies that V2X radio congestion is a significant problem in high-density situations. We will explore the potential benefits of message consolidation, update frequency vs latency, resource allocation and the potential for novel non-ip-based communication protocols. We will also investigate:* Novel lightweight privacy-preserving secure and data provenance platform to ensure the maximum security and reliability of raw data (I.e., sensors to OBU to edge to cloud) in C-V2V. Security-by-design, zero-knowledge proof and physical unclonable functions will be used to enhance sensor data security and trustworthiness.* Recommendations for cloud and edge computing integration considering latency (time to collision alert and cost); edge computing-based intelligent data analytic algorithm for generating driving scores; novel intelligent algorithms for correlating driving scores differentials with road costs impacts; road & VRU position and trajectory prediction for an early warning system to avoid collisions between vehicles and VRUs.\[1\] https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/reported-road-casualties-in-great-britain-provisional-estimates-year-ending-june-2022\[2\] https://inrix.com/press-releases/traffic-congestion-to-cost-the-uk-economy-more-than-300-billion-over-the-next-16-years/\[3\] https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/steapp/2020/12/16/walking-cycling-and-using-public-transport-how-the-uk-government-offers-to-develop-urban-mobility/
[1\] https://www.gov.uk/government/statistics/provisional-estimates-year-ending-june-2022\[2\] https://inrix.com/press-releases/traffic-congestion-to-cost-the-uk-economy-more-than-300-billion-over-the-next-16-years/\[3\] https://blogs.ucl.ac.uk/steapp/2020/12/16/walking-cycling-and-using-public-transport-how-the-uk-government-offers-to-develop-urban-mobility/
