The UK is facing a STEM skills crisis and gender imbalance in STEM due to under-representation, poor perceptions, lack of interest and low attainment in STEM subjects at schools. This project is on the development of a game-based learning solution, _Operation Outsmart_, to address lack of interest and engagement in STEM subjects for the 8-16 age group. Sandbox videogames with STEM concepts in their design, such as _Kerbal Space Program_ and _Minecraft_, have shown to significantly increase engagement, motivation, and independent research and learning of STEM subjects. _Operation Outsmart_ follows the principles of good game design and takes inspirations from the most successful sandbox games, while offering a compelling differentiation edge._Operation Outsmart_ is a survival sandbox game that incorporates concepts in science and engineering at its core. The player needs to explore the world for resources, craft them into useable items, build machines from crafted Lego-like blocks, and overcome the environmental obtsacles in the world. Throughout the game, the player designs and builds contraptions, experiments through trial and error, and learns about scientific phenomena. This approach to learning can expand interest in STEM subjects and diminish the gender imbalance in STEM.
