Launched in 2021 with the aid of Innovate UK grant funding, My SMASH Media is a unique data-driven content and talent marketplace that connects creators with commissioners, financiers and other decision-makers. Our mission is to enable content creators, especially those who may lack experience and be from diverse, under-represented communities, to make their voices heard and their creations come to life. SMASH now has over two thousand film and TV creators active on the platform and we expect to be branching into the games, podcasts and other media categories through 2024\. However, the rapid advance of AI technology has created both challenges and opportunities for the creative industries. For the SMASH community of creators, one question looms large - will AI take over jobs and destroy the creative process, or will it enable new opportunities and prove to be an invaluable assistant? For our decision-makers, they wonder how data-driven algorithms can possibly help with their complex, inexact art? As an established innovation leader in the mediatech landscape (winner of Innovation Award at 2023 Cannes Film Festival), we believe that My SMASH Media is well-placed to investigate these critical questions. With the support of this Innovate UK scheme, SMASH will establish a feasibility programme to determine: (i) whether AI can more effectively match projects and creators with decision-makers; (ii) whether AI can assist creators to complete more projects with better chances of commercial success, and; (iii) whether AI can enable decision-makers to develop more productive searches for new talent and IP. Our feasibility study will tackle these complex creative and technical questions through a mixture of closed prototyping and open iterative testing on our public platform. We wish to ensure that successful learnings can be channelled into an actionable plan so as to provide value and benefit for our users, and the media industry as a whole. Our participation in the 2023 University of Edinburgh & Bayes Centre AI Accelerator Programme, backing from Innovate UK Investor Partner Equity Gap, and technical development partners Activate Studios will all help ensure delivery of our ambitious goals. Ultimately, we believe that AI, like all technology, can and should be used for good. Our laser focus on the needs of the creative industries, and strong mission to give voice to diverse communities, will guide our study towards this goal.
