Commerci-alga - A Commercial Pilot Plant Module for high value algal products

Although microalgal systems offer many advantages for high value chemical production (e.g. valuable co-products), industrial-scale manufacture faces significant techno-economic challenges that must be overcome before algal biomass can be produced sustainably. To address this important challenge, this study investigates the building of an innovative, cost-effective, energy-efficient Commercial Pilot Module with a view to improving the efficiency and lowering the cost of commercial microalgae production. This multi-disciplinary innovation is enabled only by converging cross-sector bio-engineering and novel sample extraction IP and world-leading bio-processing expertise with specialist algal product manufacturing knowhow. This provides an opportunity for the commercialisation of microalgal production for high value chemicals such as Omega-3 oils and proteins and put the UK at the forefront of industrial bioprocessing.
