Advanced Blast & Ballistic Systems (ABBS) Limited have identified vehicle platform requirements (with vehicle manufacturers and users) for active protection measures, that pre-load the vehicle under-belly (and reduce shock deformation of the floor) and also reduce jump height (through a downforce effector), in response to an under-body blast.Our single-company Industrial Research project, SETBET (Shockwave Energy Transfer Belly-plate Effector ) delivers this protection capability for light-weight vehicles, whereby an array of shockwave energy transfer (SwE) effectors can rapidly introduce counter-impulse (downforce) into the protected vehicle, and dramatically reduce its jump height in response to an under-body blast (from a landmine or IED). SwE effectors can deliver these vehicle protection effects in a light-weight, lowsignature configuration. Survivability of the vehicle and its occupants can therefore dramatically improve, without the size, weight, manoeuvrability and operating cost penalties of additional armour.
