The main interest of the PhD is to explore new, efficient methods of obtaining high pressures/high energy density states through pulsed power driven convergent shockwaves. To do this student will:- Utilise MACH, Cepage and M3 to explore use of pulsed power driven exploding wire arrays to make convergent shockwaves in 2 and 3D (cylindrical, semi cylindrical, spherical, hemi spherical and conical section)- Use optical diagnostics including high speed framing and streak imaging to optimise position of targets within the wire arrays- Perform scaled experiments at ESRF and/or other Light Sources to directly observe target compression via radiography- Develop methods to integrate portable X-pinch sources to MACH, Cepage and M3 to perform single shot radiography potentially utilising X-ray optics.- If time allows to explore the use of diffraction and potentially X-ray Thompson scattering with the targets to directly observe phase changes, density and temperature. In each case the experimental results will be compared to theory and simulations utilising the Gorgon code in order to help better determine the conditions created inside the targets, and through synthetic diagnostics better plans the next set of measurements.
