Increasing polymer prices (c.£1300/T), decreasing polymer availability & increasing production costs are questioning the sustainability of EU polythene manufacture. CCm Research Ltd has developed a novel raw material substitute that can dramatically reduce feedstock costs by c.£240/T, alongside further sustainability benefits of 30% polymer replacement, 20% energy savings & enhanced mechanical properties. This feasibility study seeks to demonstrate the small-scale technical feasibility of effectively integrating these novel cellulose fibres within thin blown films of 8-20micron. Fibre stability, process integration, material validation & economics will be assessed & managed within the project to form the technical & commercial case for future development & for industrial commitment. The resultant lighter weight, stronger composite material offers sustainability & diversification opportunities. British Polythene Industries plc will provide industrial steering to this project.
