This project seeks to demonstrate a novel technology with the potential for reducing the financial and environmental cost associated with purifying advanced biopharmaceuticals. Many of the most promising new therapies under development are produced using living cells in large fermenters, and while the raw materials for feeding the cells are comparatively inexpensive, the purification of these complex mixtures is very difficult and frequently accounts for 80% of the cost of manufacturing. It is this resource intensive part of the production process that this project seeks to serve with the demonstration of a new process, thus facilitating the passage of new medicines to the patient at lower cost. The output from this project (the demonstration) will be utilised to form a UK development consortium to take the concept through the R & D stage and to market.
