I shall study the behavior of complex adaptive systems based on new mathematical tools including the analysis of model genomic systems linking about 100,000 genes and their products in a 'connectionist' parallel processing network. These models allow prediction of the large scale structure and behavior of genomic regulatory systems such as the numbers and stability of cell types and the overlap of gene expression patterns in diverse cell types. In addition, I shall continue work on models of morphogenesis. Experimental work is focused on generating libraries of partially stochastic genes and proteins and attempting to evolve novel functional proteins.
