英文摘要
The proposed research examines the information processing implications of positive and negative affective states. Experiencing positive affect appears to foster heuristic information processing (e.g., global, synthetic thinking focusing on impressions, generalizations, and the use of simple heuristics). Negative affect appears to fosters systematic information processing (local, analytic thinking involving attention to logic and to detail). These effects will be examined in diverse cognitive tasks (e.g., recall, recognition, categorization, analogies) by manipulating positive and negative moods (e.g., by describing emotional events or watching emotional films). The research has two goals -- (1) to develop a more precise understanding of the nature and boundaries of the phenomenon by examining the performance of subjects in positive and negative affective states on a variety of cognitive tasks, and (2) to test hypotheses derived from three existing models and two new explanatory hypotheses.
