This project aims to establish a state-of-the-art surface analysis facility that combines electron spectroscopy with dedicated sample preparation stations and transfer systems to optimise sample operating conditions. The facility will support leading-edge research on a range of functional materials by allowing detailed examination of the chemistry occurring at the material’s surface. This understanding is critical in the design of advanced materials impacting technologies such as the efficient production of clean and renewable energies, removal of wastes, chemical and bio-sensors, semiconductor production, information storage and electronic devices. Expected outcomes include new understandings of materials surfaces and new devices, with wide-ranging socioeconomic benefits as well as growth in new industry sectors, both in Australia and internationally.
