The demand for coatings with targeted functionalities such as anti-fouling, self-healing, antiiceand fire-retardancy is increasing. Microencapsulation techniques can be utilised toencapsulate a range of substances thereby providing a tailored release system that react ondemand and provide the desired functionality. However, the adoption of microencapsulationwithin coatings has so far been limited with traditional methods being inadequate to achievethe required functionalities at industrial scale. escubed – a spin-out from Leeds Universityhave identified an opportunity to develop a novel platform encapsulation technology based onmembrane emulsification to support industrial scale manufacturing of functional coatings. Itwill enable manufacturers to create smart coatings that interact with their environment.
