COMPACT - Development of an innovative, small footprint glass bottle compaction system

We have developed early stage concepts for the crushing or compaction of glass bottles invenues including pubs, bars, restaurants and stadia. We have carried out field trials with earlyprototypes and the customer feedback has been overwhelmingly positive. The COMPACTproject will transform these initial concepts into an innovative, small footprint system forcompacting glass bottles. The system will be modular enabling it to be configured in a numberof different ways to suit different situations in how bottles are fed into the machine and howglass cullet is removed from the system.The glass compaction unit will be used within a closed loop system to realise revenues atmultiple points throughout the value chain including the sale/rent of units, collection of wasteglass, reprocessing, Packaging Recovery Notes (PRNs), sale of recycled glass & themanufacture of high value added products.The main objectives for the project are:i) TECHNICAL – to develop a safe, modular glass compaction system capable of achieving a10:1 compaction; with a footprint of 20bottles/minute (or 150kg/hr); colour sensing to separate clear & coloured glasswastestreams.ii) ENVIRONMENTAL - to reduce the volume of waste bottles, to reduce the number oftransport movements to collect waste glass, to improve utilisation waste collection (bettertonnage per vehicle) because of compacted glass rather than high volume bottles, separatedclear & coloured glass increases remelt & recycling rather than low value glass aggregate.Clear glass sells for up to £70/tonne and green/brown for circa £30/tonne.
