Brush commutating electric DC motors (BDC motors) are used in large numbers inautomotive comfort systems, industrial applications, aviation, power tools, home appliances,furniture, toys, models and many, many other commercial and consumer market applications.IDEAdvance has exclusive rights to DCM-MotionTechnology (DCM), a new and patentedtechnology for sensor-less motion Detection, Control and Monitoring of BDC motorsdeveloped by our parent company. With sensor-less DCM the sensors, sensor wires andconnectors currently used in BDC motor applications to detect and control speed and positioncan be avoided. Further the new technology enables commutation synchronised variable speedcontrol of the motor thereby reducing the brush arcing, which will extend the lifetime andreduce the power consumption of BDC motors and therefore their CO2 footprint. Thetechnology also enables new possibilities for accurate torque/speed control and for in-situmonitoring of the condition and characteristics of the motor.While the technology has been proven in simulations and lab tests, the aim of this project is toimplement a demonstrator to prove the concept works in a real application and to verify thebenefits of the technology. Since automotive comfort systems such as power windows andseats are one of the largest markets for BDC motors with sensors, a sub-scale automotivepower seat assembly with sensor-less detection, control and monitoring is an ideal feasibilityproject.With more than 6Bn BDC motor systems sold annually, and at least 2Bn of these requiringspeed/position controls, the market potential for more efficient, cost and energy savingelectric motor solutions is huge. When this new and patented technology has been provenIDEAdvance intends to sub-license DCM to mass market manufacturers of electric motors,applications and solutions, and supply complete solutions to SME’s.The project is endorsed by UK and EU suppliers to the automotive industry.
