Birley Manufacturing Limited is one of the UK's leading manufacturers for interiorenvironments and rail carriage equipment. The business was founded in 1875 by the Barlowfamily and it is owned by Michael Barlow [4th generation]. Based in Sheffield, wemanufacture a range of products in wood, metal and other materials and we also specialise inbespoke and roll out programmes for blue chip clients. Our team comprises almost 90 peopleranging from skilled bench joiners and metal working specialists through to designers,engineers, planners and project managers.Due to our involvement in the rail industry, we have become aware that changes inlegislation, both in the UK and Europe, means the industry has to provide ‘Persons withReduced Mobility’ compliant Toilet Modules in all rail carriages by 2020. Such modules willneed to be retrospectively installed in current rolling stock as well as built into new rollingstock. Initial research leads us to believe that around 2,000 Toilet Modules will be requiredover the next 6 years for retrofit but the module can also be used in all future new builds. Themarket size for the provision of toilets and installation of such is considerable with theongoing potential of manufacturing modules for carriage builders, both in the UK and Europe.Having established considerable market presence and developed long term relationships, webelieve we can succeed with this development project and based on the fact that there islimited competition, we are confident that if funding is made available to design and developa “Birley Module” we would certainly achieve a major market share. This developmentwould also consolidate our position in the market, enable us to develop more products for theindustry and enhance our ability to enter export markets. The project will safeguard the futureof the company and will support the UK economy at all levels, providing additional valuableemployment and revenue.
