TRAINING PROGRAM IN MENTAL HEALTH SERVICES RESEARCH

The proposed NRSA program will focus on training postdoctoral candidates in Mental Health Services Research. The postdoctoral training program will be based in a large mental health services research program at the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) and will take advantage of opportunities for multi-disciplinary collaboration with other colleges and departments at UAMS and with the health services department at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. Trainees will represent a variety of disciplines such as psychiatry, nursing, health services research, psychology, sociology, social work, economics, epidemiology, biostatistics, and other specialties in medicine. Trainees will be supported for either two or three years of research training. The program for trainees will include both common specialized components to address similarities and differences in prior education, clinical experiences, and areas of competency which trainees bring to the program. The common components include training in mental health services research and mentored research activities. Faculty will individualize the academic and research programs for postdoctoral trainees to enhance existing expertise and research interests. Trainees will have the opportunity to participate in research programs of experienced investigators through secondary analyses of completed projects. In addition, trainees will receive individual mentoring in the development of their own research proposals, papers, and presentations. Funding is requested for seven 2-year traineeships and three 3-year traineeships for postdoctoral trainees. Efforts will be made to attract trainees who are committed to a career specific to understanding and improving mental health services. Minority candidates will be actively sought through a number of University initiatives.
