DESCRIPTION (Adapted from applicant's abstract): This proposal is focused on aspects of visual adaptation in the vertebrate retina. The proposal is divided into three broad aims: (1) to clone, sequence and express connexins from skate and catfish retina and perform functional and comparative studies; (2) to identify, with electrophysiological methods, the GABA receptors of bipolar cells and Muller cells in the skate retina and to examine their modulation; and (3) to assess the role of IRBP in retinal development and the rhodopsin cycle. In the latter aim, a variety of studies will be conducted on transgenic mice with an IRBP knockout or partial expression.
