The primary aim of my PhD project will be the investigation of the nuclear structure of exotic nuclei through the measurement of their hyperfine structure. This will be performed using the Collinear Resonance Ionisation Spectroscopy (CRIS) experiment at CERN, which combines the high resolution of collinear laser spectroscopy with the high efficiency of ion detection. The nuclei in question, which include neutron-rich isotopes of oxygen and fluorine, and neutron-deficient isotopes of tin, lie at the edges of nuclear existence and investigating them using the CRIS technique will provide assumption-free measurements suitable for testing modern nuclear models. For example 23O, this is of interest as its measurement would robustly test effective field theories that include three body nuclear forces.
