The project involves experimental work on strong photon interactions mediated by dipole-dipole interaction between highly-excited Rydberg atoms. By measuring photon correlations in light stored as Rydberg polaritons we can probe the properties of the Rydberg media in order to investigate the physics of Rydberg soft matter, and control photon correlations with a view to applications in quantum information processing, quantum computing and quantum networks.An additional tool in the control armoury is a microwave field that both modifies the interactions between Rydberg atoms and controls the state of the stored photon.The project is linked to the EPSRC funded grant on Rydberg soft matter EP/M014398/1 that includes a theoretical collaboration with the University of Nottingham.
