Black holes and quantum gravity are remote phenomena that cannot at present be accessed experimentally, but - in an example of what might be called the unreasonable connectivity of physics - quantum field theory, condensed-matter physics, and quantum gravity are now all using the same tools of quantum information theory, and confronting many of the same underlying problems. This circumstance has led to a highly productive multidirectional flow of ideas among research areas. This project will apply ideas from quantum information theory to understand aspects of quantum gravity, and in particular the black hole information problem. Focus is likely to include understanding information loss (fundamental or effective) and overcoming the tension between such information loss and other aspects of quantum field theory such as locality and conservation laws.
