The rapidly growing Muslim presence in Europemakes more urgent the longstanding conflictbetween Islamic and Western understandings of thepolitical world. Islamic scholarship advocates apolitical order grounded in faith, which is at tensionwith the liberal democratic ideas that reject thelegitimacy of political systems established on thebasis of religious principles. This research seeks toaddress the question of compatibility of Islam withliberal values by conducting a comparative analysisbetween the moral language of Islamic faith andfundamental liberal democratic ideas in light of theRawslian theoretical framework. John Rawls, as apre-eminant liberal theorist, articulates afundamental set of liberal ideas and optimisticallyassumes that the doctrines of a pluralist democraticsociety would not conflict with the ideas andprinciples of a liberal democratic political culture.This project assumes that a liberal democraticsociety requires the support of different doctrinaltraditions in order to enjoy legitimacy and politicalstability. Therefore, to test Rawls's optimisticassumption and provide support for liberal valuesfrom an Islamic perspective, I will analyse thedoctrines of scholastic theology (ilm al-kalam) andmoral theology (usul al-fiqh) in the Islamic Intellectual tradition, as well as re-assess Rawlsianliberal ideas. To assess more carefully thecomptability of Islamic doctrines to fundamentalliberal ideas, the project will employ the method ofcomparative political theorising. The contours of thesimilarities and differences between Islamic doctrinaltradition and political liberal ideas could helpunderstand whether Muslims would withdraw theirsupport to liberal societies as the presence of Islamicfaith becomes more prominent. By paying heed tothese similarities and differences, the result of theanalysis will help to enrich both the Islamic andliberal intellectual traditions, deepen theirunderstanding of each other and engender respectfor the doctrinal pluralism that characterises liberaldemocratic societies.
