Recent problems with injectors have been attributed to internal diesel injector deposits (IDID) and characterisation of such deposits in fuel systems is a priority worldwide. These deposits have been shown to be layered using a number of techniques, most notably time of flight-secondary ion mass spectrometry, and further focused-ion beam transmission electron microscopy studies have provided a gateway technique to allow exploration of these layers. These and other appropriate techniques will be further developed to provide the detailed information on deposits that is need to understand their origin and formation.
