英文摘要
With the sheer scale of devices that are being built and used day by day, there hascome with it the simultaneous growth of new types of applications that are highlylatency-sensitive. For these applications the traditional cloud model, whereby anapplication communicates with a data centre(s) at some point in space, is notoptimal for its latency sensitive requirements. The fog, initially proposed by Cisco,is a middle layer between the cloud and the edge of the network, allowingapplications to be run on hardware and resources throughout the network, such asrouters and switches. This allows the application to meets its latency sensitiverequirements by using already provisioned network hardware close to the edge ofthe network. With the rise of the fog, a new set of research challenges have emerged. Some ofthese include how to program for the fog, how to manage and place applicationsthroughout the hardware resources on the network, and how to scale thoseapplications in an optimal manner. There is currently no way of allowing developersto be able to program their applications across the "full stack" from the edge to thecloud (and make full use of the advantages that come with them). My solution is this: For a developer to be to achieve this full stack programmingcapability by composing their application as a series of microservices which willthen be embedded inside of Docker containers and subsequently orchestratedacross the full stack of edge, fog, and cloud. My PhD will focus on building thescheduling algorithms that will be responsible for making decisions as tohow to intelligently orchestrate the user's application in order to meet its desiredrequirements.
