While research on 2D materials has been on-going for many years now, their impact and potentialfor new disruptive technologies remains limited by issues with their growth and lack of controlledand reproducible interfacing and device integration. This project will explore key mechanisms thatdictate crystal phase, structural, defect, interfacial and heterogeneous integration control for 2Dmaterials of different classes, incl. graphene, hBN and TMDs. We target a holistic understanding ofnovel integrated functionality in selected application areas such as (bio)sensors, (opto)electronicsand filtration. The project will bring together the world-leading growth expertise at the University ofCambridge with the unique characterisation facilities available at NPL, in particular the novel use ofadvanced secondary ion mass spectrometry imaging to gain unprecedented insights into the role of impurities in nucleation and device operation.
