Exploring linguistic change in Anglo-Norman using character N-grams

This project will apply quantitative methods to the study of a medieval contact variety of French, known as Anglo-Norman. Character N-gram models will be used to investigate this variety, which developed in England after the Norman Conquest. N-gram models have successfully been employed in previous datadriven studies to identify morphological and lexical changes in languages. In this project they will be applied to study the spread and change of Anglo-Norman, and the ways in which it developed, and the nature of its influence on English. Through this a data-grounded database will be compiled.
