IS MY BODY OUT OF DATE(s)? The Drag of Physicality in the Digital Age

Taking drag as a queer analytic and artistic tool, thispractice-led research looks at the tension between theperceived burden of fleshy physicality in the digital age onthe one hand (it would be easier to be free of my body), andthe queer/intersectional feminist implications of attainingthis on the other (who and where would I be without mybody?). To explore this, I will drag drag through theory andpractice in four different directions: down, as in the physicalburden described above; dragging up, as a way ofexaggerating physicality with all its messy, abject,unimproved glory; dragging away, as a mode of escape (orbecoming untraceable) and dragging across: multiple bodiesembodying and performing a single common identity as acall to action, participation, collaboration and confusion inthe face of neo liberalist, individualist, positivist claims toidentity. The drag will take place online and offline,networked and separately and is set against the backdrop ofelite discourses of AI, extra-planetary escape and theories oftrans-humanism that leave those of us for whom suchescape is not possible feeling that our bodies are out of date;our physicality a burden.
