For his physics analysis work, the student will analyse ATLAS data and simulations to develop optimal searches for supersymmetric (SUSY) signals in lepton-rich final states, also in view of future LHC luminosity upgrades. The main focus will be on potential' signals from electroweak SUSY particles, such as charginos and neutralinos, decaying to multileptonic final states. To this purpose, the student will also study relevant Standard Model processes, such as multiboson processes or processes in which top quarks are produced, which are important backgrounds for SUSY searches. He will also collaborate with ATLAS trigger experts and make significant contributions to the development of software for the ATLAS trigger system, also in view of luminosity upgrades. He will participate in ATLAS experimental operations as relevant. Over the course of his PhD, the student will visit CERN and other locations (in the UK and abroad) regularly, for the purpose of acquiring relevant research skills as well as other important transferable skills, and to interact efficiently with non-Sussex ATLAS experts and members of the particle physics community at large. He will also spend an extended period of time (Long-Term Attachment) at CERN.
