Title continuation: period (c.1880-1930)Modernist rural fiction frequently engaged with the idea of the ecological network, producing subjectivity through discourses of location, proximity and embodiment. Situated within the field of ecocriticism , the project will examine the way D.H. Lawrence, Katherine Mansfield, A.E. Coppard and other contemporary writing, reconstituted models of subjecthood as a phenomenon of proximity to and interaction with natural space. With its roots in Romanticism, the project will consider the way space constructs subjectivity along epistemological, political and corporeal lines, including the way specific sites of location, such as the garden, engender a confrontation between the real and the symbolic.
