An Exploration into Female Sexuality as found in Late Antique and Early Byzantine Literary Culture

I wish to explore the topic of female sexuality and desire in Late Antique and early Byzantine literary culture to create a corpus of evidence that does not currently exist. The notions of female sexuality, and in particular of female homoeroticism, have been overlooked and downplayed by previous scholarship. In order to address this deficiency, my proposed thesis would allow for a re- examination of female sexuality in a broader sense using esoteric sources currently excluded from the modern scholarly narrative. Through the close reading of Early Byzantine astrological texts, my thesis will both uncover a new area in Byzantine literary studies and form a major contribution to lesbian historiography.
