Translating female voices of the Spanish Civil War from Catalan into English.

The overall aim of this research is to investigate how Rodoreda's authorial identity shifts in translation, identifying which narratives are at play and why, in the source and target texts. How Rodoreda's fiction has been renarrated in English and what impact this has on Anglophone readers' understanding of female experiences of the Spanish Civil War will be considered. The project aims to be insightful and relevant, not only by contributing to the development of socio-narrative theory in literary translation in particular, but also in the understanding of how Catalan female writers are received and represented in English translation. this may also prove impactful for commissioners of Catalan literary works or writers from minority cultures in English translation. Potential research questions therefore include:- How has Merce Rodoreda's authorial figure been (re)narrated in Anglophone markets?-How has the translation of Rodoreda's work contributed to Anglophone readers' understandings of women's experiences of Spanish Civil War?-In what ways has Rodoreda contributed to or developed the Catalan literary sphere, and how has the translation of her works also contributed to this?
