Topological error correction for quantum computing at scale

Quantum error correction (QEC) is necessary for a fault-tolerant universal quantum computer in the medium- to long-term. Surface codes are a dominant technique in QEC, which consider physical qubits laid on the surface of some topology, such as a torus or plane. This project aims to investigate the state-of-the-art in microarchitecture design for topological QEC (in particular, decoder algorithms), including developing simulation and benchmarking tools for such designs. So far, particular attention has been directed to a recent (2020) and promising proposal of union-find decoder hardware, with a variety of possible improvements surmised.
