Language Quality and Maternity: How to ensure effective communication in maternity settings where healthcare providers and users do not share the same

My PhD research project will focus on communication across languages in maternity settings. What happens when health care providers and users do not use the same language? What kind of impact will advocacy have on professional service, healthcare staff, service user and interpreters? This research is urgently needed. Our societies are increasingly multilingual, with East London alone there are about 140 different languages been spoken each day. Many of which been called 'rare languages' have few or no trained professional interpreters (both spoken / signed languages) and translators (of text). Public sector organisations face a growing need to deliver services and engage with users across languages, in the context of dwindling budgets and emerging technologies. The related challenges are profound, including practical, financial, commercial and technical. Yet frontline workers, such as doctors and midwives, typically have no training or expertise in cross language communication and, under pressure to cut cross on 'non-core' services, may see emerging technologies such as Google Translate or remote video interpreting as an attractive apparent solution.There are massive changes happening among newly arrived communities nowadays in East London. What kinds of difficulties and challenges do they face, specifically in maternity settings. Advocacy is still a rare form of facilitating in medical settings across NHS. Are their service a cost for NHS or actually an investment to more efficient way of delivering care? No study has yet examined the combination of maternity settings, remote video interpreting, user experiences and the impact for quality of service provision, nor are there any practical guidelines recommending when each technology might, and should never, be used, or advising on ethical concerns around data protection, patient consent and so on. This project is seek a unique across to the data and user experiences which are needed to answer following questions in real-world setting.1. Health Inequalities - what's the impact of advocacy and interpreting on health inequality? What's its benefits?2. Operating Framework - what interpreting mode is suitable for each antenatal appointment? How did we get to this? Can it be applied widely?3. Procurement guidance - interpreting qualification matrix, what level interpreter is necessary for what assignment? How can the research support an improvement in the quality of public sector tenders?
