英文摘要
Created in 1943, the French militia, la Milice française, was a Franco-Nazi initiative to combat resistance, with 35,000 members across France, many of whom were also members of collaborationist groups, such as the Parti Populaire français or Groupe Collaboration. These young people committed executions, persecuted Jews, and worked hand-in-hand with the Nazioccupier. This doctoral thesis will study several episodes of certain miliciens' emotions and motivations across France. The approach will include a micro-history according to Davis' (in Pallares-Burke; 2002) definition: "an in-depth study that is rich in itself but also reveals connections with other processes and events outside itself" as well an anthropology of emotions permitting an analysis of the temporal dimension and local particularity of emotions. (Beatty, 2013). Reconstructing these episodes and sensations of miliciens in their local socio-historical context and combining them will clarify the motivations behind joining this extreme-right faction.Timescale- 1st year: Identify all existing scholarship on the Milice on a regional level, as well as studies regarding the French Right before the war to develop a strong hypothesis before archival work begins. A thorough in-depth study of available archives, and potentially a short trip to gauge the scope of these archives will allow for ample planning in year- 2nd year: Archival research in France and access secondary literature unavailable in the UK. Meet with French academics working on similar questions. Write a first draft while researching to capture the emotion of the archives.- 3rd year: Finish writing thesis; present paper in SWW-DTP and other postgraduate events; prepare an article for publication.
