Real Estate and the Realist Short Story in the United States, 1973-1992

My doctoral thesis examines portrayals of real estate in American realist short stories of the 'long 1980s' (1973-1992)-aperiod of economic uncertainty bookended by recessions. My project focuses on Lucia Berlin, Raymond Carver andLorrie Moore, each of whom represents a major strand of the period's 'renaissance' of realist short fiction: Berlin's,Carver's, and Davis's stories have, respectively, been termed realist 'autofiction' by Lydia Davis, 'dirty realism' by BillBuford, and 'program era' realism by Mark McGurl. However, my research has the potential to extend to other writersand movements. My thesis proposes that realist short fiction of the long 1980s articulates a reconceptualisation of theAmerican 'home' as a place of transience, in response to the newly destabilised housing market. My thesis contends,moreover, that Berlin's, Carver's and Moore's innovations in the realist genre challenge the economic financialisation ofthe period. By describing real estate-the spatialisation of capital-these writers resist the increasing abstraction of thederegulated capitalist economy. Berlin and Moore remain critically neglected, while Carver has yet to be examined indirect relation to real estate. Research Questions: 1) How does American realist short fiction of the long 1980s presentreal estate? 2) How were these literary representations formed by economic transformations? 3) What impact doeseconomic periodisation have on critical interpretations of the canon?
