Traditionally, the first stages of research for developing a novel organic synthetic route typically take place in classical round bottom flasks. However, this approach has a number of shortfalls, such as limitations in mass and heat transfer, and ability to handle hazardous reagents or reactive intermediates. In these respects, continuous synthesis in flow offers a promising alternative. However, best practice is still lacking with such systems. This project will aim to develop effective organic synthetic routes on a continuous flow paradigm, from a milligram to gram scale. In particular, this project will focus on developing novel routes to synthesizing heterocycles with well-defined substitution patterns.
