This project assesses interpretations of female authority in the classical Islamic tradition, specifically focusing on notions of political and religious authority. This includes an assessment of Quranic commentaries, legal manuals and political literature. This project will also include an exploration of how constructions of female authority within religious discourse are currently being utilised to limit female autonomy within the contemporary world. Furthermore, the attempts and methods utilised by Muslim feminist thinkers to reread the classical tradition will also be explored.
