This project examines Hispanic female authors' responses to the querelle des femmes, unpicking the links between the exploitation of women, the accumulation of capital and the gendered dissemination of power within a colonial matrix. By considering how and why Hispanic women's literary voices were able to contest what, at first, may appear to have been a culture uniformly adverse to women's expression and emancipation, this project will probe the ways in which Early Modern female authors challenged the notion of male supremacy, attempted to rewrite the female identity in more favourable terms and carved out intellectual spaces for their texts.
