The research explores the cultural memory of Second World War conscientious objection in Britain since 1945. As Linsey Robb has noted, 'the Second World War British conscientious objector has, to a remarkable degree, been omitted from both the popular narrative and the historiography of Britain's war experience. ' The project will address this gap in the field and examine how those who refused to fight the 'Good War' have been remembered and represented subsequently. I will investigate a number of different 'sites of memory' including memoirs, autobiographies, novels, plays and commemorative monuments.
