Research Topic: Disputing Diego Garcia: how Mauritius used strategic litigation to redefine the decolonisation debate

This project analyses the collision of circumstances that enabled the Mauritian government to request that the International Court of Justice interrogate processes of decolonisation in the Indian Ocean. It explores how Mauritian narratives of anti-colonial resistance formed and reformed in response to Indian independence and Cold War rivalries on the one hand, and domestic political trends and the formulistic requirements of litigation on the other. I assess these narratives against a backdrop of developments in international law and the role of the United Nations in regional politics.
