Britain inside or outside of Europe during the Mesolithic-Neolithic Transition: a Lithics perspective

This project will investigate new claims for Continental connections in the fifthmillennium BC and based on these results explore the nature of changes thatdefine the start of the Neolithic at c4000BC. This will provide a new regional,long-term perspective on social dynamics over the British Mesolithic-NeolithicTransition that moves away from overgeneralised models. It will do this byexamining southern British Mesolithic and Neolithic lithic assemblages fromsites dated with unparalleled precision. These will be compared to continentalassemblages using novel statistical techniques to gain a nuanced understandingof the varied timings and tempos of the British Transition.
