When developing targeted cancer biosensors, the aim is to create probes that are as selective as possible to aid in accurate disease detection. This can be greatly enhanced through the use of probes that can interact with more than one target simultaneously, dubbed multivalency. Many cancer cells exhibit an increase in the expression of the CD44 protein at their membrane surface in comparison to healthy cells. In this study, acoustic techniques are used to characterise the multivalent interactions of CD44 protein coated biological membranes with functionalised gold surfaces. The binding information collected will be used in the development of theoretical models that will feed into the design of highly selective CD44 targeting biosensors.
