My research interests are focused upon the application of computational and genetic techniques to problems in the life sciences. I have found population genetics and evolutionary-developmental biology to be particularly fascinating as they combine understanding how genes interact to create life and, how genetic differences lead to diversity. To further explore these areas I undertook a dissertation project, supervised by Professor Alistair McGregor, where I investigated the spatiotemporal expression of paralogous genes in the spider Parasteatoda tepidariorum; this project primarily used molecular techniques to clone and generate probes for genes of interest that were used in hybridisation experiments. Furthermore, I am also pursuing an independent study with Dr Daniela Santos-Nunes to identify polymorphic sites in Drosophila simulans and D. mauritiana using population genomic data obtained from pooled sequencing and to develop a web application that allows nucleotide by nucleotide comparison for both species. I am an organised and motivated student. The research that I have undertaken, as part of my undergraduate course, has provided me with a range of skills in both molecular biology and bioinformatics; and, through attending weekly research seminars and discussions with researchers from across the UK. I have gained insight into how research progresses in academia. Moreover, my position with the IT Services department has developed my general technical knowledge and problem solving skills, while allowing me to gain experience writing technical documentation.
