Deaths in the community under supervision post-release from custody

The aim of this research would be to explore the factors, both individual and systemic, involved in deaths of individualswho are under supervision in the community, following release from prison. In order to do this, the work would employ amixed methods approach. The literature review would include a description of recent policy changes relating to the healthand criminal justice services, and their effect on supervision and support post-release from custody, as well as anexamination of existing studies looking at deaths across the criminal justice pathway. Document reviews would look atreports such as fatal incident reports from the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman relating to deaths occurring inApproved Premises, and Coroner's reports. Empirical research, such as interviews with people under parole supervision,with bereaved families, and with practitioners, would aim to explore the lived experience of people under supervisionpost-release from custody. This work has possible implications for policy and practice, such as NHS England spendingand commissioning of healthcare services, and future developments in the structure of the probation service. It also hasthe potential to contribute to addressing the issue of how deaths occurring under parole supervision should beinvestigated and scrutinised.
