This project explores how the physicality of coastal environments had a crucial role in shaping the habits and cultural values of their dwellers beyond borders and addresses the following research questions: How did variations in waterscapes and landscapes play out in senses of space and self? How did the interactions between regional, national, and transnational formations fashion human responses to change at local level? How does a transnational approach to coastal environments contribute to reassessing the significance of materiality in questions of lived experience? How might approaching seas as dynamic entities offer new insights into rurality, regional identities, and transnationalism?
