This project will explore the synthesis and characterisation of newcovalent organic framework (COF) materials which lay intermediatebetween amorphous porous polymers and crystalline porous metalorganic frameworks in that COFs are entirely organic but havecrystalline structures. The advantage of crystalline materials is thatthey have well-defined homogeneous environments which are easierto characterise and understand, thus enhancing the ability to designmaterials for specific applications. Three-dimensional covalentorganic frameworks built from strong chemical bonds are rare, andwould be important in a range of applications.The project will develop the amide framework-forming chemistryreported by the group1, and develop related approaches thatreversibly form strong covalent bonds to make robust networks. Thematerials will be evaluated for applications in catalysis, separations,gas storage and ionic conductivity. The project will make use ofrobotic high throughput methodologies to explore a wide range ofchemical space.
