My research will unpack the constructions of gender identities in Malawi and explore thelinks with gender-based violence at secondary schools, and ask if school-related genderbasedviolence (SRGBV) can be understood as a display of masculinity in this context. I willuse an ethnographic approach and qualitative tools including focus group discussions,structured interviews, case study methodologies and media analysis to build anunderstanding of how gender identities are constructed in Malawi, unpack the risk factors ofSRGBV, and use a systems thinking approach to show any dynamic relationships betweenthem.
