Mobile Health Technology for Patients Suffering with Anxiety and Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain

Anxiety is a common comorbidity in patients with Chronic Musculoskeletal Pain which contributes to higher levels of reported pain, diminished levels of quality of life, and a burden on the NHS. Although the influence of anxiety on patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain is known, little has been done to investigate the potential impact mobile health technology could have as part of treatment. We use a mixed methodology approach to investigate the use of mobile technology, focused on the symptoms of anxiety, and the impact this has on patients' levels of pain and their quality of life. Studies are planned with the aims of understanding the efficacy of ecological momentary anxiety apps, defining the issues faced by patients with anxiety and chronic musculoskeletal pain, and identifying areas where mobile technology support could be of use to these patients. This will culminate in the design of an application, using the input of potential users, which will then be tested. By determining the potential efficacy of mobile health technology in the treatment of anxiety in patients with chronic musculoskeletal pain, the financial and resource burden placed on the NHS by these patients can be reduced, and their overall quality of life improved.
