Soft tissues are essential constituents of the human body. They are highly deformable, enabling the body's functions. However, the majority of existing biomaterials cannot replicate the structure and properties of native soft tissues, limiting the effectiveness of soft tissue repair and reconstruction strategies. This project aims to manufacture novel biocompatible and biodegradable polymer scaffolds with similar morphologies and mechanical properties to those of a load-bearing soft tissue for the regeneration of soft tissue that has suffered losses or defects due to diseases, aging or injuries. A series of polymer scaffolds will be prepared, with their structure, mechanical properties and biodegradation kinetics characterised. The scaffolds with optimal morphologies and properties will be selected to assess their potential in soft tissue regeneration. The structure-function relationships of the polymer scaffolds will also be investigated.
