Atmospheres of transience: a scenographic engagement with liminal spaces

This practice-based project uses scenographic concepts and techniques to illuminate the way that moving bodies are affected by and have an effect on environmental atmospheres. Everyday environments shape the interaction between humans, objects and materialities. These co-produced, mobile relationships contribute to the generation of atmospheres, particular felt qualities of space, which act on our perception to produce an experience of place. Site-specific performance intensifies this interaction by defamiliarising a site's materiality. In dislocating the site from ordinary life it reveals a collage of meanings, memories and associations (Irwin, 2009, p.103). This can give insight into the complex nature of our interaction with designed spaces both theatrical and quotidian.
